Initiatives inspired by the work of the Corporate Equity & Inclusion Roundtable
The following initiatives and activities have expanded the presence of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the Pittsburgh Region:
CEIR has hosted the CEIR Conference each year, starting in May 2013, bringing together thousands of leaders from the corporate, education, and non-profit communities to examine strategies, programs and activities aimed at increasing meaningful diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the Region.
CEIR has hosted several Implicit Bias Trainings over the years, attended by several hundred persons, which have provided attendees with new and meaningful insights into implicit bias and how these new insights might positively impact the environment within their work place. CEIR has received rave reviews about these trainings.
SHARE was initiated by then UPMC’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Rob DeMichiei following his presentation at the first CEIR Conference held at Duquesne University held in May of 2013. Toni Silva, the former UPMC Director of Supplier Diversity, and UPMC began to share their minority contractors and suppliers with other companies and corporations. After a few years, UPMC brought on new corporate partners for what became the annual SHARE conference. Minority contractors have benefitted from millions of dollars in contracts over the years through contacts made at SHARE conferences. In 2018 UPMC announced ‘SHARE Harrisburg’.
Concierge Pittsburgh, launched by Barry Nathan in 2016, supports the recruitment, employment and the retaining of African Americans and people of color throughout the Pittsburgh Region.
The Advanced Leadership Initiative (TALI), launched by Evan Frazier, former Senior Vice President of Highmark, was according to Evan, inspired by his attendance at the CEIR conferences. This initiative was formed to support mid-level African American employees throughout the Pittsburgh Region to be mentored and supported to become future members of the “C” Suite and has an ongoing partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)’s Tepper School of Business.
CEIR has at times hosted “The Diversity & Inclusion Forum" featuring issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
The CEIR “Initiative for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” document is an effective ‘Game Plan for Action’ which CEIR seeks for area companies, corporations, colleges and universities, and major non-profits to adopt and utilize as tool for creating a new and meaningful commitment to these important goals. Various key entities in the Pittsburgh Region have endorsed and are utilizing the initiative, including the Pittsburgh Steelers who have committed to share the document with every team in the National Football League (NFL).
